Not at fault? You might be entitled to a replacement vehicle.
The clear lens over your vehicle’s headlight is made from a type of polycarbonate plastic, which is prone to scratches and sunlight damage. Car manufacturers apply a UV radiation protective clear coating over the polycarbonate lens, but this coating naturally fades over time and often far quicker than the life of the car. The lens plastic eventually degrades in sunlight and from road debris, causing the foggy, yellowed, scratched and damaged appearance you often see. This problem is often worse in regions such as Brisbane which have high levels of UV exposure.
Headlight covers are not only a cosmetic eyesore, they are a vehicle safety hazard. The haze that can form on your headlights reduces the amount of light that projects onto the road – reducing visibility. Its not only important to recondition your headlights to keep your car looking its best, but to make sure you maintain maximum visibility.
If the UV protective coating is not reapplied to a damaged headlight lens, then the damage will continue to occur until the headlight is beyond repair and costly replacement parts will need to be installed. Headlight repair and restoration is faster, cheaper and easier than part replacement.
Consumer grade DIY headlight restoration kits (found here, and here) often contain a mild abrasive paste, and an applicator to restore clarity. It is not advisable to use a consumer grade headlight restoration kit for a few reasons:
As seen in the video above, the technicians at Little Knocks use thorough restoration processes, and the highest quality materials to recondition and restore your vehicle’s headlights.
9.5/10 times it is easier, quicker, and considerably cheaper to have us restore your headlight rather than replace it. OEM replacement headlights are costly, plus the labour to have them fitted. Aftermarket headlights range in quality and we have experienced units that do not fit properly. For a fraction of the cost, you can have your current lights restored to their original condition.
Yes, QLD law states that a vehicle is not roadworthy if “[headlights] are not clearly visible under all normal conditions and of a consistent intensity, or are affected by dirty lenses or poor electrical contact.”
Driving with damaged and cloudy headlights drastically reduces the effectiveness of light transfer through the lens. This is an extreme road hazard has driver visibility is reduced, as well as other vehicle’s ability to see you.
